Jane will help health & wellness practitioners with payroll, too
[.c-case-study-tag] Introduction[.c-case-study-tag]
Jane is a clinic management software and EMR designed to help health and wellness practitioners care for their clients and run their businesses.
Jane was founded in 2014 and offers an ever-growing suite of features, including online booking, scheduling, insurance billing, documentation, integrated payments, telehealth, and more. Clinic owners and their teams love Jane because it allows them to manage all of their daily tasks in one beautifully designed, user-friendly place. This, along with Jane’s award-winning customer support and dedication to building alongside their community, has made it a favorite among clinic owners, practitioners, administrators, and clients.

Jane’s customers are busy. During business hours, they’re most often focused on providing excellent client care, along with all of the admin involved.
This means that the admin of running a business, including critical tasks like payroll, often falls to their evenings and weekends. Jane’s mission is to “Help the Helpers,” and that includes finding ways to help clinic owners run their businesses within business hours. One pain point that often has owners burning the midnight oil is payroll.
Practitioners and administrative staff working in health and wellness businesses are paid with a wide variety of compensation models, often with a mix of contractors and employees within a single clinic, making it challenging for owners to find a payroll solution that fits their unique needs. Currently, owners can easily pull data from Jane to calculate compensation but require 1-3 additional pieces of software to actually pay their staff. Then, their staff will require an additional log-in just to access their pay details.
Jane’s customers need a complete solution that can simplify this task and provide a delightful experience for both staff and owners.

Jane saw that there was an opportunity to go beyond the traditional function of an EMR to support their customers, so they partnered with Salsa to integrate payroll management into their platform.
For years, Jane has helped clinic owners manage basic practitioner commissions, a standard compensation model in the industry. Adding payroll to the platform allows clinics to manage all aspects of staff compensation in the place where they already spend the majority of their time– Jane– without the need for additional software and log-ins.
"We're always striving to make Jane even better for our community of helpers. Running a small business is a lot of work.. and anything we can do to ease their workload - like simplifying payroll - just makes sense. Partnering with Salsa is a fantastic opportunity to use the data Jane already has, hopefully making payroll a bit less daunting. We’re really excited to see how this will help our community."
- Alison Taylor, co-founder and co-CEO of Jane
Leveraging Salsa’s deep payroll product experience, Jane is working towards a world where the compensation data in Jane is turned into money in staff members’ bank accounts on time and with as little admin as possible. The result will be a simple yet powerful solution for clinic owners and staff and a first of its kind for the industry.
Salsa’s flexible architecture allows Jane to customize the payroll system to meet the specific needs of health and wellness businesses, including managing contractors and employees in the same place, tracking practitioner and administrator earnings, automating payments, and ensuring compliance with healthcare regulations. Salsa’s customizable components align with Jane’s commitment to serving the needs of their diverse customer community, and it will also allow Jane to provide those customers with a solution faster.
Another factor that helps Jane meet the needs of its customer base is Salsa’s unique support for the Canadian market. Many start-ups that are founded in the US tend to focus solely on the needs of the US market. But Jane, as a Canadian start-up, needed to be able to serve customers in Canada, as well as in the US. Salsa’s commitment to international support was essential in Jane’s decision to partner with them. With a single integration, Jane will be able to serve customers on both sides of the border without additional product work. Salsa’s payroll engine automatically adapts the customer experience based on the location of the clinic, so Canadian and US businesses will see steps that are relevant to their jurisdictions. On the back end, Salsa handles all tax calculations and filings in both the US and Canada.
“It was a long road to find the right partner for our payroll solution– months of getting to know different companies, their teams, and, of course, their APIs. Initially, the landscape looked pretty similar, but the more we dug in, the clearer it became that the Salsa team and their expertise were the right fit. Everyone has been super responsive to our needs, and we know that this will be critical to building a product our customers love.”
- John Whaley, Senior Product Manager
Beginning an embedded payroll journey is another step that Jane is taking to ensure their customers can focus on what matters most: helping their clients & running successful businesses. Salsa is providing Jane with the critical functionality & partnership to accomplish that goal.
